Another Reason Mike Savage Can Bite Me!

For those who are not aware of political commentator Mike Savage's comments on Autism, you can read an article here about them. The long and short of it is he doesnt really think Autism is a real disease, that it is over played, and more a sign of lazy parenting.

The man is an idiot on many fronts, but on this one it is clear. Having a kid with Autism is the LAST thing a lazy parent would want. Who wants the rounds of rounds of tests, taking off work to spend hours at various evaluations? Lazy? Far from it.

Never mind what it does to your finances. We took Sinan to a well known local neurologist who works at the National Children's Hospital. He ordered several tests for Sinan, all but one involved the drawing of blood.

Cost for these half dozen blood tests? $4,000. That doesnt include the doctor's bill or the MRI he ordered. Yeah, so not only are we, as parents of Autistic children lazy, it would seem that we are LOADED as well.

What an a**hole.

I heard what Mike Savage said about autistic children... What a crum-bum! Talk about ignorance, I wonder if he would be saying the same thing if he had a child with autism???

I heard about this asshole :(

This kind of shit hurts my feelings, man... my mother works with kids that have autism, and it's not fake. It's just not.

Sorry you have to deal with the added pain of listening to a**holes like him, on top of everything else AND a $4,000 bill.

You should just copy the bill and mail it to him. You could write on there "the price of lazy parenting".

I swear to God I will never complain about paying $80 for our kids labs again.....my goodness!

The one test was almost $3,000. The doctor tried to explain that one to us, but not being a doctor or a bio-med person I didnt get it.

It was something about a double chromosomal thing.

He said 99% of these tests come up negative, but most parents want to rule anything out. I agree, I dont want to sit here 20 years from now and second guess myself as to what I could have done, what tests I didnt take, ect.

Autism is very expensive. I have a co-worker who has two children with Autism herself. She got one evaluated and started ABA therapy this summer. That cost her $20,000 just to start.

It is nice to have that kind of cash, but we certainly dont. Both her and her husband both work.

That is why I hope the bill passes in VA that will FORCE insurance companies to cover ABA therapy. We will be able to afford it then. It will still cost us like $7,000 a year, but that beats the $30,000+ a year it would cost if we could afford to go with private pay therapy.
